Elland Road Set to Get a Whole Lot Louder

Regarded by many as one of the most atmospheric grounds in the country, Elland Road is one of the most iconic stadiums in English football.

With development plans now approved to expand the ground by over 15,000 seats, the home of Leeds United looks set to get a whole lot louder in the not-too-distant future.

Elland Road in Desperate Need of Development

While Elland Road might boast one of the best atmospheres in British football, this traditional ground could certainly use development. Leeds, who are 10/1 in the football betting markets to finish in the top half of the table this season, have not made any major changes to their stadium since the construction of the East Stand all the way back in 1993. Looking to compete with top teams like Manchester City, Liverpool and an Arsenal side who are 1/5 favourites in the Premier League title betting, the Leeds hierarchy know they need to increase revenue through the expansion of Elland Road. Selling out most home games when they were in the Championship, the need to increase capacity has been clear for a number of years.

Since Marcelo Bielsa took charge of Leeds in 2018 and transformed the club’s fortunes after years of stagnation in the Championship, demand from supporters for tickets at Elland Road has gone through the roof. Back competing where they need to be in the Premier League and receiving much-needed funds from playing in the top flight, plans to develop Elland Road took another major step forward in January with approval from Leeds City Council to expand the stadium to around 53,000.

Louder Leeds an Exciting Prospect

Already one of the loudest stadiums in the country at its current capacity of 37,645, an Elland Road holding 53,000 is something Leeds fans and travelling supporters alike can look forward to. Developments to the West Stand, North Stand and alterations to the South Stand are in the pipeline to finally bring the ground into the 21st century. Once among the best teams in the country, Leeds’ decline over the last couple of decades has been well documented. However, since Bielsa’s arrival in West Yorkshire and, more recently, Daniel Farke guiding the Whites back to the Premier League, things have looked much rosier for the club.

No longer considered as a sleeping giant, these latest plans to redevelop Elland Road show just how far the club has come in recent years. Chairman Paraag Marathe and the 49ers Enterprises, who own Leeds United, have overseen positive change and the Whites are hopeful they can maintain their status as a Premier League side for many years to come. There is still plenty of work to be done to get Leeds competing at the top end of the league once again, but the club appears to be trending in the right direction.

Meanwhile, with the development of Elland Road and recent approval from Leeds City Council, it is certainly an exciting time off the field for this iconic English football institution.
