Start With What Cannot Move



At a newer stadium, contractors may have room for stockpiles, wide access routes, and heavy plant. A historic ground can offer none of those comforts. The stand foundations stay where they are, floodlight bases cannot shift, buried services cross awkward routes, and the street outside still has to function.

The first survey, therefore, looks beyond the grass. Contractors map levels, drainage outlets, access widths, underground obstructions, and locations where excavated material can be placed without blocking emergency routes. Local geology, drainage capacity, the water table, and the available outlet all affect the profile below the grass. At an old ground, those technical demands have to fit around structures that may predate modern drainage standards by decades.

Good design separates football heritage from faults that interrupt football. The ground can retain its shape and atmosphere without keeping the puddle that forms after every hard shower.

Drainage Has to Find a Way Out



Water does not care that a stand has occupied the same spot for a century. It still needs a route from the surface, through the root zone, into the drains, and away from the ground.

A modern natural-turf profile may include sand-based root zones, drainage pipes, and a gravel layer that helps water move towards an outlet. Historic sites complicate that neat cross-section. Contractors may need to work in short sections, use smaller machinery, or alter drain routes to avoid foundations and buried services.
